Pencil Holder

Dad's Quick Quack Pencil Holder

Materials:
Sm ball 100% cotton thread, (size 10) White (MC)
4 yds 100% cotton thread, (size 10) Cream
8 yds 100% cotton thread, (size 10) Brown
15 yds 100% cotton thread, (size 10) purple, lavender, variegated lavender or variegated purple
Steel crochet hook USA, size 8 (1.50 mm)
Molding Materials:
Spray starch
Iron/ironing board
Empty can of La Choy Rice Noodles (3 oz) for holder, (wrapper removed)
White spray paint (optional)
Finishing Materials:
Glue (optional)
Tapestry needle
4 (1/8") plastic eyes (optional)
Finished Size: 4 ½” T x 3" in dia.
Gauge: 5 dc = ½” / 2 rows = ½”
Skill Level: Medium
Special Stitches:
Dc Dec: (Yo, insert hook in indicated st, pull up a lp, yo, draw through 2 lps) as many times as stated, yo, draw through all lps on hook to complete the st.

Holder: (Using MC)
Rnd 1) Starting at bottom: ch 4; (13 dc) in 4th ch from hook; join with a sl st to top of first ch 4: 14 dc.
Rnd 2) Ch 3 (counts as first dc), dc in joining; * (2 dc) in next dc; rep from * around; join with a sl st to first dc: 28 dc.
Rnd 3) Ch 3, (2 dc) in next dc; * dc in next dc, (2 dc) in next dc; rep from * around; join with a sl st to first dc: 42 dc.
Rnd 4) Ch 3, dc in next dc, (2 dc) in next dc; * dc in next 2 dc, (2 dc) in next dc; rep from * around; join with a sl st to first dc: 56 dc.
Rnd 5) Ch 3, dc in next 2 dc, (2 dc) in next dc; * dc in next 3 dc, (2 dc) in next dc; rep from * around; join with a sl st to first dc: 70 dc.

Ducks: (Make 4)
Duck Body: (Using cream)
Row 1) Ch 4; (5 dc) in 4th ch from hook (first 3 chs skipped count as first dc, now and throughout). Fasten off, secure ends: 6 dc.
Row 2) Join brown where last st was worked; ch 3, (2 dc) in next st; * dc in next st, (2 dc) in next st; rep from * once: 9 dc.
Row 3) Ch 3, turn work; * dc in next dc; rep from * across.
Row 4) Ch 2, turn work; dc in next dc (counts as first dc dec), dc in next dc; * dc dec over next 2 dc, dc in next dc; rep from * once: 6 sts.
Row 5) Ch 2, turn work; dc in next 2 dc, dc dec over next 2 dc, dc in last dc: 4 sts. Fasten off, secure ends.
Duck Tail: (Using Purple or variation thereof)
Row 6) Join thread where last st was worked; ch 3, dc in next 3 sts: 4 sts.
Row 7) Ch 2, turn work; dc dec over next 3 sts: 1 dc dec. Fasten off; secure ends.
Duck Head: (Using purple or variation thereof)
Row 1) With duck facing to the right, (left, for left handers), join thread to row 2 of duck body over the dc post: ch 1, sc in same sp, (2 sc) over row 3 of duck body: 3 sc.
Row 2) Ch 1, turn work; sk first st, sc in next 2 sc: 2 sc.
Row 3) Ch 3, turn work; (2 dc) in first st, (3 dc) in next st: 6 dc.
Row 4) Ch 2, turn work; dc dec over next 2 sts (counts as a dc dec over 3 sts), dc dec over last 3 sts: 2 sts. Fasten off, secure ends.
Duck Bill: (Using cream)
Join thread to top of row 3 on head front; ch 2, dc in joining. Fasten off, secure ends.
Wings: (Using purple or variation thereof)
Row 1) Ch 4, (3 dc) in 4th ch from hook: 4 dc.
Row 2) Ch 2, turn work; dc in next st, dc dec over last 2 sts: 2 sts.
Row 3) Ch 5, turn work; sc in first st, ch 6, sc in same st, sl st in last st. Fasten off, secure ends.
Finishing:
Lightly spray starch over crocheted holder, cover with a handkerchief and press using a cool iron setting. Repeat with each duck and wing pieces. Either tack or glue wings to ducks and ducks to crocheted piece, positioning the ducks on four sides of the holder. Insert can inside.
You can spay the can white before inserting in the crocheted piece, if desired. Small 1/8" plastic eyes can be glued to the ducks if desired.
